Green Button data shows your electricity use hour by hour for up to 24 months. That hourly pattern decides how much solar your Ontario home can use itself, which is the only part that saves money on a Home Renovation Savings rebate system and the part that decides whether a battery pays.
A home battery is the better fit for short outages and daily bill savings, while a fuel generator is the better fit for long winter outages. Before choosing, answer two questions: how long your outages usually last, and which circuits must stay on.
The Métis Nation of Ontario Solar Panel Program gives eligible Métis citizen homeowners a one time forgivable loan toward a new rooftop solar system of at least 5 kW AC. The loan is fully forgiven if you keep the home as your primary residence for two years after completion. As of September 2026, applications are suspended because demand exceeded funding.
The difference between a low voltage and a high voltage solar battery is how it talks to the inverter. Low voltage is a 48 volt bank wired to a separate inverter. High voltage is a sealed system where the battery and inverter come as one certified product. High voltage is the premium pick, and it is the better choice if backup power matters to you.
For most Ontario homes, a battery without solar is a weak buy in 2026. On the Ultra Low Overnight (ULO) price plan, a battery alone might trim roughly $530 to $650 a year from a bill, depending on home size. It gets no Home Renovation Savings rebate, and payback often runs longer than the battery’s warranty.
Ontario's current electrical code gives a home battery four approved homes: the exterior wall of the house, an attached garage, a detached garage or other free standing structure, or a dedicated room or utility room built to fire construction minimums. Bedrooms are prohibited, and the capacity cap changes with the location.
